Marmaris culture

Marmaris is not
just a place sea, sun, rest and fun. It is also a place with international
events. Starting in September 2000, and ever since on annually bases,
there is an international tango festival. If you are a yacht person, than
in Marmaris you can partake in one of (or all) the competitions, or just
watch it. Yacht's people come from all over the world for these events. It
is possible to sea boats with English, Australian, E.U members, north and
south America flags.
Marmaris
amphitheater (next to the cemetery), holds many concerts and musical
events, especially, in the months of July and August. Some of the
performing artists are not Turks, and some even come from outside of
Turkey. In addition to that, there are ethnical music concerts in Marmaris. Groups from all over the world come to Marmaris, for this
colorful festival. It lasts for few days, while each group has its own
special costume. Part of this festival is, a belly dance competition, with
many styles of belly dancing.
Marmaris International tango festival
Tango lovers from all around the world coming to
Marmaris for this event, since 2000. Some of the most famous name of
tango, such as;Ulli Barth from Germany, Eric Jorissen from Holland,
Claudio Hoffman & Pilar Alvarez from Argentina, and, Emed Cheman from
Spain, partake at time, in this event. The festival's days are felled with
dancing competitions, when the music is played by international bands.

Maritime festival
This
international sea festival, started on April 27 2005. It is a week long,
with many events and combinations
as well. It is organized by the
municipality of Marmaris, the Marmaris Yachting club and the Turkish navy.
It is the biggest maritime event in Turkey, with boats, ships and people
from all over the world. The events are all over Marmaris, Icmeler and
Armutalan. It ranges from beach volleyball, through diving, synchronized
swimming, “Tour De Marmaris”, yachts' races, tug of war competitions,
cocking contests, parades , there are also live concerts on the streets,
shows, fire works and much more. On the first festival, an Olympic
swimming pool was opened. Some countries have send some war ships to be
placed on display, and the sailors paraded on the streets.

The yachts
festival was established in 1981 and it is happening in April, every year.
Yacht clubs from all over the world participant in this event. The race
takes place between the bays of Marmaris and Icmeler. Many people stand on
the hills that over look the beautiful bays. This is also the time when
buyers and sellers get together, to buy/ sell yachts.
The international Gulet festival Bozburun- October

The
Gulet(Turkish yacht) is native to this region Turkey. It is build mainly
in the Marmaris, Bozburun and Bodrum areas. It is a good time not just to
see the different kinds of Gulets, but also a chance to see Gulet in
different stages of constriction.

National Children's Festival- April 23
This festival/
holiday, was established by the founder of the modern day Turkey, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, in 1923. it is dedicated to children, and children at
heart. It is customary to handout candy to children, and partake in one of
the parades.
Marmaris Chess Club
The club, that is
sponsored by the city of Marmaris, has weekly chess tournaments from April
until November. In these tournaments, chess players play and practices for
international tournaments. One of thus tournaments take place in Marmaris,
in the month of August. Many international chess players participate in
this tournament. Among the known players, you can find Erik Van Den Doel
from Holland' Vladimir Burmakkin from Russia, Tim Upton from Scotland and
Pedram
Atoofi from Iran.
Marmaris Antiquities and museums
According to
the historian Herodotus, the castle of Marmaris exists since 3000 b.c.
During the Hellenistic period, Alexander the great, invaded with his army
to the Caria region, that Marmaris was part of it.
The 600
besieged residents of the castle understood that they don't have a chance
against the sieging army, so they have burned all their properties in the
castle, before they fled with their families to the hills.
Alexander,
knowing the strategic importance of the castle, ordered to rebuild the
castle. He then turned it into dorms for some of his solders, before the
went back home.
In 1522, Sultan
Suleiman the great, ordered to renovate the castle, before he went on, to
conquer the island of Rhodes.
In 1979, the
castle was once again rebuild and turned into a museum. There are 7 main
galleries in the place. On display, you can see artifacts from around
Marmaris. They were brought from places as far as Knidos, and it spans
over 2000 years of history. Today, the only inhabitants in the castle, is
a family of turtles.

Opening hours are from 08:00 in the morning until the noon, and from 13:00
until 17:30.
Marmaris's ancient amphitheater
In the summer
time, and throughout the touristy season, many shows and concerts are
being held. It is an open amphitheater and it's not far from Armutalan.
