Pamukkale, or as it is
also known “The Cotton Castle”, is about 4 hours drive from Marmaris. It
is one of the most visited attractions in the world. Going out of Marmaris,
north east, will bring you to the “Muğla” junction (after about 25
minutes). Instead of turning right towered the “Dalaman” airport, you need
to turn left. On the way, while you drive up the hill, you should stop at
one of the “Vista” points along the way. If the weather is nice, and not
hazy, you will be able to see the golf of “Gekova”, underneath. It is
possible to see the road you came with, as well. On you go, and after a
short drive, you will get to the city of “Muğla”. It is the province's
capital. The population in “Muğla” is about 1 million people. Just before
the city, you need to turn right, towered the village of “Tavşa”. It is in
the “Guinness world book of recorders” for having the biggest number of
mosques per capita.
The road to Pamukkale is covered with antiquities, from many periods such
as: bronze, Greek, Roman etc. on the way, you will come to the city of
Denizli, which is the capitol of the province, is located on the south -
east of Anatolia heights. The city's emblem is a rooster and it has around
800,000 people. Denizli has been populated since 5500 b.c. non stop. The
land around the city is fertile, with many water springs, hence its name.
This area is also rich in mineral deposits, that have created the “Onyx”
stone. This stone, comes in many colors, due to the different minerals, a
quality, that makes it a good stone for many types of jewelry, art
artifacts and more. On the way from Denizli to Pamukkale, there are some
work shops and galleries, with Onyx items for sell. Just before Pamukkale,
there is a big outlet for textile.
As you approach Pamukkale, you can see the
white terrace, piled up. These terrace were made by hot spring water
bubbling at the surface. The temperature is 35c°.
thanks to the topographical structure of the place, the water accumulate,
and stay in natural pools. According to scientists, this place is over 14
million years. Pamukkale was always popular with people, thanks to its
medicinal water. Because of that, Pamukkale became the center of a pagan
cult, where the ruins are today.
The city
was used, in the Roman times, as health center for the Roman rich. The
place is filled with typical ruins from the Roman empire. On one side, is
the Roman “Spa” and on the other side, is the “Necropolis” (the city of
the dead). The amphitheater on site, was part of the entertainment, that
was provided to the guests in Pamukkale. Many people come to Pamukkale for
more than a day. They stay in one of the hotels/motels around the site.
Some of these hotels/ motels, were build on part of the hot water springs.
Walking around this site, revile ruins of old Roman medicinal bath houses
and pools, as well. The differences between the pools can be found in the
form of size, water temperature, and location on site. The site is active
in winter even when it
snows. To learn more about the place, you can visit the museum, where
artifacts that were dug out here, can be found.
It is advised to bring
along bathing suet, hat, water and good mood, as well. In the summer, the
best time to come to Pamukkale is in the early hours of morning, to avoid
the heat and sun. in June- August, try to get there, until 10:28, since it
gets hot and dry quickly!!!
